Angling Report from Kolding River30/08/2008 08:23:06
Yesterday evening I was rewarded for my patient regular visits to the river. I expected that the rain during the last weeks would have increased the water level substantially. The best fishing in the Kolding river is ususally after a spate in falling water, when there the water level is so high that the vegetation along the river banks is submerged in water.

Thursday evening was such a day in falling, but still turbid water, where the sea trout leave the shelters early, because they believe that it´s dawn and the sun has disappeared. Therefore fishing can take place 24 hours a day. I prefer fishing, when there is sufficient light to see the fly touch the water. Although the weather was overcast and it rained, the fly was visible.

I began fishing at one of my favourite places where a tributary discharges into the Kolding river. I decided to tie Honky Zonk to the line, a fly that has caught many sea trout.

At 20:00 a sea trout took the fly and I realised that it was a very big fish. My first impulse was to press the fish away from the weed along the river banks. It worked and the fish stayed in the middle of the river. I spotted a suitable landing place, a flat sand bank with shallow water. Therefore I pressed the fish to move upstream to the pool nearby this bank.

This strategy worked well, the fish went upstream and I tired it in the stream. It was difficult to decide how tired the fish was. I took a couple of chances and pressed it to the "beach", but it swam into the pool again. But the third time the fish changed position from upright to lay down and I grapped it with my special gloves and carrried it safely on land.

I was surprised when I realised that the fish was very big. I killed it and enjoyed the view of a beautiful male sea trout, 73 cm long, 4,8 kilo. This is definitely the best fish I have got this year and although it was demanding to carry it back along the river, it was a great feeling.

Such a catch happens sometimes, when we are lucky.

Best wishes from
