The European Union wants to reduce the opportunities for red tuna fishing on a worldwide level to ensure replenishment of the stock. This is the position announced today, on the eve of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) meeting, which opens tomorrow in Recife, Brazil. In this vein, the Commission received a strong mandate from the Council. Despite European fishermens profuse efforts and the progress made, said European Fisheries Commissioner Joe Borg, the red tuna situation requires further intervention.
